Xiaomi becomes second largest smartphone vendor in India in Q4 2016

Xiaomi is a well known and popular smartphone brand globally, but unfortunate for the company, unlike Huawei or Oppo who sell their smartphones in almost every part of the globe, Xiaomis reach is limited to Asia (and South America) market including India, which is the most important market for the Chinese smartphone maker.

Xiaomi reached new heights in India in the year 2016, breaking sales record in the online platform and crossing $1 billion mark revenue. The company had claimed that it sold over 2.3 million units of Redmi Note 3 in the country in 2016. The companys strategy is pretty simple, target the mid-range (sub-Rs. 10,000) smartphone market with aggressive pricing, and so far has not disappointed the customers.

Continuing to shine, Xiaomi citing IDCs report today announced that it was the second largest smartphone vendor in the country. The company claims that it sold more than three million units of Redmi 3S series smartphones including the Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime and offline exclusive-Redmi 3S Plus in less than six months, which contributed to Xiaomis success and majorly to its growth in Q4 2016.

Xioami also maintained the number one position in the online smartphone market in the same period.According to IDC, Xiaomi climbed up to second place in Q4 2016, with 10.7 percent share, compared to 3.3 percent share during the same period last year.

The year 2017 also looks bright for Xiaomi in India market. The companys latest budget offering to the country, the Redmi Note 4 is already a hit. During the first sale, 250,000 units of the phone went out of stock in under 10 minutes, creating a new online record.
