Samsung SDI to invest 128M to improve battery safety

Following Samsungs statement as to the cause of the Galaxy Note7s untimely death, the companys battery and energy storage subsidiary Samsung SDI has announced measures its already taken and plans to implement in the future to ensure the unprecedented high-profile recall doesnt happen again.

Samsung Galaxy Note7

Samsung SDI is going to invest KRW 150 billion ($128 million) in expanding infrastructure for improving battery safety. The company has already installed an emergency situation room at the Cheonan plant and also established a task force to deal specifically with battery safety immediately after the recall was announced in September. The task force team includes 100 people from three divisions - development, production and technology, and quality and verification.

The safety measures start from the development process where design precautions are being ta ken to prevent the compression of electrolytes. At the production stage X-ray inspection on all products ensures a one in a million chance of defects, previously unattainable by sampling methods. Sampling is employed at the next stage, quality and verification of finished products, but the number of samples has been increased 1000-fold to span millions of cells.

The actions seem to be working, judging by the company statements that smartphone manufacturers have increased their orders for polymer batteries from Samsung SDI, to the point of returning to pre-Note7 levels. Samsungs next smartphones are likely to be using in-house batteries too.

Galaxy Note7 variant with 6 inch display spotted on Zauba

As you might already know, Samsungs upcoming Galaxy Note - the Note7 - has been the subject of numerous leaks and rumors so far, with those related to the devices display suggesting a 5.8-inch screen.

However, going by a recent listing on Indias import and export tracking website Zauba, there may exist a variant of the handset that sports a 6-inch display.

Although Zauba listings have usually been spot on as far as the screen-size information is concerned, theres still a possibility that it (6-inch display for Note7) is a mistake on their part.

And what adds weight to this possibility that the phones unveiling is just a few weeks away and we havent heard about a 6-inch variant from any other sources. But if such a variant does exist, well surely get to know more about it in days to come.

Moto ‘batwing isnt going away new boot animaition for all Moto devices

“Hello Moto” was Motorola’s slogan for a long time, since around or before the time of the RAZR flip phone. This iconic slogan was also a default ringtone for many who owned Motorola Handsets. Although some might not know it, Motorola’s ‘batwing’ is one of the most iconic logos when it comes to cellphones and communications.

Since Lenovo’s acquisition of Motorola from Google, some consider Motorola to be gone, but Lenovo wants everyone to know the Moto brand will carry the legacy and iconography that the brand carried for many years. Hearing the “Hello Moto” slogan in the new boot animation below strikes a nostalgia cord for me, and surely many others.

Moto’s USA Twitter account posted a video of the new bootup animation with the final note ending on a “Lenovo banner”. The boot animation (to me) feels like a mishmash between retro design language and popular symbols and icons. Not to mention a new voice that says “Hello Moto”. From the looks of the way Lenovo is presenting and advertising the Moto brand, it appears to have every intention of maintaining the iconic presence that Motorola had over the years.

This new startup animation will be updated on current Moto smartphones. When they first launched, the Moto Z and Z Force were missing the batwing in the animation, (granted the logo was on the back of the phone) but it looks like the logo was too iconic to leave out, they had to bring it back.

Thanks for the tip, Felipe!
