Referencing tables using captions

Tables, like many objects in documents, can have titles or captions. You can easily add a bookmark to text on a table, but using captions is an alternative to cross-referencing tables.

To add a caption to a table:

1. Place the insertion point inside the table.

2. Click the Caption button on the toolbar.

3. Type a Caption and select Table from the Category list. Click OK.

To add a cross-reference to the table:

1. Click Insert > Cross-refer ence.

2. Select Table as Type.

3. Select the table from the list of tables.

Note: Tables without captions are not listed.

You can choose to add the reference link as a Page, Chapter, or the tables Caption Text. You can also use a combination of them.

The following example uses the Category and Number and Caption Text.

You can also add captions to Text boxes, with Text as the Category (although Writer assigns Drawing as the Type when adding captions to Text boxes). The same process is used for illustrations, screen captures, and diagrams. Add a caption by right-clicking, and then clicking Insert Caption.
